MARIS MELLUR IS A CONTEMPORARY ARTIST BASED IN NORTHERN GERMANY

The high-contrast, minimalist paintings by Maris Mellur are austere, yet at the same time organic, flowing and almost light. The strong reduction to the essentials lends the images, often in black and white, an authoritative presence that is impossible to escape. Sometimes they show seemingly organic, meandering forms, then again apparently strict systems of lines or flowing structures that appear to bend in the wind.
The works are purely informal, depicting nothing, and yet one  immediately begins to decipher them, to recognize something in the depictions, a landscape, a system, an idea. The main message, however, is reduction itself, the power of simplicity, the clarity achieved by dispensing with the superfluous. Mellur is inspired by Scandinavian and Japanese imagery and the culture of Zen, which is conveyed in the paintings and quickly transferred to the viewer. (Dr. Felix Brosius - artnow Gallery)
